Cheap Bosnia City Breaks 2026: The Last Underpriced European Destination

Bosnia is the destination most UK travellers haven't seriously considered — and that is the entire reason it's cheap. Sarajevo and Mostar are fully-formed European cities with Ottoman old towns, remarkable food and mountain scenery, at prices that feel closer to a long weekend in Manchester than a Mediterranean capital.

Where to base yourself: Sarajevo, Mostar, or both
Sarajevo is the cultural heart — Baščaršija bazaar, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture, cable car to Trebević. Base three to five nights here for a single-city trip.
Mostar is the picture-book stop — UNESCO Stari Most bridge, compact old town, day trips to Blagaj, Kravice waterfalls and Počitelj. Two to three nights is enough.
Best structure: fly into Sarajevo, three nights; train or bus to Mostar (the train ride is spectacular), two nights; fly out of Sarajevo. Total five nights, roughly £600–£900 per person mid-range.

- Bosnian coffee is a 20-minute ceremony — order at Baščaršija and give it time.

- Cash is still normal outside bigger restaurants — currency is KM/BAM, pegged at €1 = 1.96 KM.
- English is widely spoken in tourist areas; hvala (thank you) goes a long way elsewhere.
- Sarajevo–Mostar train runs two or three times daily — beautiful and cheap; buses are frequent if you miss it.

The best time to go in 2026
May, June and September are Bosnia's sweet spot — warm but not oppressive, all outdoor activities open, lower prices than July–August. Mostar can hit 40°C+ in peak summer.
October is beautiful and cheap; winter works for skiing at Jahorina or Bjelašnica, 30 minutes from Sarajevo.
